3 Signs You Need Your Septic Tank Pumped

Septic service

About a quarter of all US homes have a septic tank, which is an underground structure that treats wastewater from your home. This can include wastewater from bathrooms, kitchen sinks, and laundry machines.

Your tank works to separate waste, which includes solid waste, and floatable matter. The water-tight container helps wastewater find its way back to the soil after the solid waste and floatable waste has been removed. This allows for the harmful bacteria and viruses to be naturally removed, so it will not hurt organisms.

Every once in a while, you might need a septic tank treatment, and have it cleaned and pumped. Here are three signs to look for that can let you know that your tank needs servicing.

1. Your drains are slow

Did you know that homes with a garbage disposable are at risk of up to 50 percent more waste than homes that do not have one? It’s true! If you’ve been noticing that your drains are slow while you have been doing the dishes, it could be a sign that you need a septic tank treatment. Septic cleaning can help unclog your drains and also keep your toilets flushing and draining properly. If you notice your toilet is not flushing and emptying right, and that the sinks or bathtub drains in your home are slow, it could be a sign that your septic tank needs cleaning and is starting to back up.

2. You notice some funky odors

Another telltale sign that you’re in need of a septic tank treatment is that you can smell some pretty foul odors. Your septic tank not only collects solid waste, but also dirty water that comes from showering, washing clothes, and using the toilets. In fact, a single family in the US can use up to 70 gallons of water per person per day. That’s a whole lot of water! If you smell some putrid odors in your yard, it could mean you need a septic cleaning or septic pumping to rid it of waste.

3. Your sewer is backed up

This is the most visible sign that your septic tank needs a treatment, and is also the grossest. You don’t want to have your septic tank get to this point, but if it does, be sure to look for a septic service ASAP. You might notice feces and other waste products in your shower drains or backing up in places that it shouldn’t be. If this is happening, call someone immediately as it can indicate a serious septic issue.

Be sure to know the signs! A healthy and clean septic tank goes through pumping, repairs, cleanings, and other treatments every so often to keep it working at its best. Don’t be too worried if you notice any of these signs, as there are septic services always willing to help.
