The tiny house movement has become quite a big thing recently. There are several concerns about living in a tiny house, but one of those would be about the plumbing. Is there room for water tanks? Would well water be a better idea? Is well digging available where tiny houses are permitted? Having a basement sump pump installation done is probably pointless considering you probably wouldn’t have a basement if you live in a tiny house. So, here are some ideas for getting water in and out of a tiny house.
Forego the plumbing all together
Of course they easiest way to deal with plumbing is not to have any. You can have water without having plumbing but it does make things less automatic. If you decide to go this route then you’ll have to literally carry the water to and from the house. You could have little water storage places near the areas where you might need water throughout the house like sinks and showers and toilets. To carry the water you’ll need buckets or jugs so that you can carry enough. If your tiny house is in a campsite or someone’s yard then this won’t really be a problem but if you are not near a water supply, you’ll have to buy water in bulk and store it which might mean leaving it outside. But, on the bright side, you won’t have a plumbing or water bill to worry about anymore at all.
Pump water from water tanks
this option is probably a little more practical if you want to be as self sufficient as possible in your tiny house. You could install water tanks an d use a pump in order to make sure that the water is circulated and properly pressurized. It would give you the illusion of living in a normal functioning house while still allowing you live off grid, if that’s what you want. The downside is that pumps are somewhat noisy and water tanks can take up a bit of space, which you don’t have a lot of to begin with. A water tank might be an eyesore in your tiny house but there are ways that it can be stored, such as under the kitchen cabinets for example.
Use an RV Hook Ups
If you don’t want to live off grid then you could hook up your house in a similar way that an RV is hooked up. It’s similar to regular plumbing, just on a smaller scale. There are a few different ways that you can do this, so you’ll have to do a little research before you start.
Pump from a well
Well drilling services are not exactly cheap so if you don’t want to spend a lot of money then going with the well option is not the greatest idea for you. However, if you are planning to stay in one place and don’t mind investing in your future, then you could definitely do something like this right near your tiny house. That is, of course, as long as all the city regulations are in place.
Hybrid it
You could actually use a conventional hook up but also set yourself up with a tank in case you decide you want to go off grid for awhile. Having the double option will give you a lot more freedom and flexibility for when you need it. Being able to plug in and let the water do its thing, or get out and travel somewhat without worrying about water is a great way to live. This does require the most work although it could be worth it if you’d like to have both options available to you.
Living in a tiny house is not something that everyone could do. While it’s definitely a good way for minimalists to live, it’s not for everyone. You should continue to research and find out if this is something that you are really up for doing. There are so many more things to consider besides plumbing and how you’ll get water. However, if you do decide that you want to live in a tiny house, then above are some great ways for you to still be able to get water.
