If you’re looking to learn how to be a locksmith or start working for business locksmith services, you first need to know the tools of the trade. Start simple and build a good foundation, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a pro.
The first tool you’ll need is tweezers, but you can leave the ones you use for plucking your eyebrows at home. Locksmith tweezers have specially designed grooves at the end to pick up pins.
The next tool you’ll need is a follower to re-key a lock. Get a high-quality set that will last you a long time. Make sure it has different ends to the cylinders so you can access almost every type of lock out there.
You’ll need an end cap removal tool to take off the end cap on deadbolts, and a kwikset cylinder removal tool. Otherwise, it’s really difficult to re-key kwikset locks. You’ll also need a key gauge that covers the four major locks that you’ll come across: the kwikset, wiser, westlock, and schlage.
The simplest and most inexpensive tool you’ll need is a shim to pick a lock when you don’t have a key. You’ll need a pick set to go along with your shims, and there’s no need to get a very complex set. You only need a rake, hook pick, and a diamond pick.
